Reaching For Joys memory therapy program visits 12 nursing homes and lockdown units in this area. In just one of these nursing homes I had the pleasure and the honer to become friends with three beautiful souls. These gentlemen where tucked away in the corners of the nursing home to reflect upon their lives with hardly anybody around to share those secrets and relections with. One of these gentlemen was a puplished poet of the Kentucky Poet Society. Another man had been a Harlem Globetrotter and Coach of the Globetrotters for ten years. He had played with the likes of Curly Oneal and Meadowlark Lemon. The third man had been the pilot of one of the lead bombers in Normandy during World War 2. Of the three men this gentleman was having the hardest time of letting his secrets, or should I say guilt, be shared with others. He had saved so many lives, that he had a musieum named after him in England. Two out of three of these gentlemen have now crossed over, but my life has been enriched and enlightened for knowing these precious souls.
So the next time, and I hope thats soon, that your in a nursing home looking at the lost souls, just look at them as walking and talking history lessons with a soul. A soul that NEEDS to be OPENED and READ. Even if you dont know anybody in a nursing home, just stop in and ask if theres anybody you can chat with or listen to. Your soul will be richly rewarded for sharing this beautiful experience.
